It is our great pleasure to deliver another volume of Research Papers on Asia-Pacific economic issues. Each year we present you multiple points of view on that topic, trying to show how much the processes in Asia & Pacific affect the world economy. After nine years of hosting international scientific conference dealing with that region’s affairs, we are still confident that these issues are important not only for the countries of the region, but also for economies worldwide. This year we have chosen for you 15 articles. All of them where submitted for this year’s conference entitled “Asian Economies in the Context of Globalization”. Seeing that some authors describe the issues of countrywide importance and others of those having regional or global meaning, we have decided to group them according to the criterion of impact range. The first chapter – Asian Economies in the Global Context – is a collection of papers on general regionalization or globalization issues. T. Sporek is trying to refresh the view of the globalization processes occurring at the crossroads of economy and politics. M. Bartosik-Purgat is analyzing sources of information about products and services in the light of cross-cultural research. E. Majchrowska is using Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership case to show the importance of mega-regional blocks in global trade. In addition, we decided to add to this part the articles the subject of which is not so general, but it applies to trade relationships of a global nature. This will be the EU-India trade and investment agreement (G. Mazur), Poland-ASEAN agri-food products trade (K. Kita) or anti-dumping procedures against China under WTO rules (J. Skrzypczyńska). Articles in the second chapter are – as the title implies – embedded in a regional context. P. Pasierbiak deals with trade regionalization in East Asia. S. Bobowski offers an insight into ASEAN-Japan Economic Partnership. A. Kuropka and A.H. Jankowiak analyse the impact of natural disasters on production networks in the region. As the last in this section we have placed the article about Singaporean Competitiveness Model applied in European economies (M. Żmuda). It may be not strictly connected with Asia & Pacific, but its concept is to transfer Asian experience to Europe at the regional level. The last chapter – Asian Economies in the Local Context – is mostly about domestic matters of Asian countries. You will find there three articles about China (J. Bogołębska writing about Chinese monetary policy, A. Klimek describing cross-border mergers and acquisitions by Chinese state-controlled enterprises, S. Stępień and A. Sapa showing Chinese pork sector), one about Indonesia (Development of Islamic banking in Indonesia by I. Sobol) and one about North Korea (M. Kightley applying game theory in prediction of political changes in that state). We think it is an interesting set of papers you will find valuable in your studies. We also hope that your scientific interests will continue to be associated with Asia and that is why we invite you to the 10th anniversary conference which will be held at the Wrocław University of Economics in November 2017. We appreciate your time and consideration, as also time and effort of our peer reviewers. We look forward to the further submissions of interesting papers on Asia & Pacific. Thank you! Bogusława Drelich-Skulska, Anna H. Jankowiak, Szymon Mazurek

Globalization, growing competition and market complexity, as well as technology and enterprises innovation related changes that currently take place in the world create new challenges for Asia and Pacific countries, that have to set ambitious goals and take effective action in their development. The globalization processes affect the development of new forms of competition between countries, but they also become an important stimulator for the creation of various links and cooperation between the groups such as ASEAN and the EU as well as between the selected countries. These countries undertake initiatives to develop favorable economic connections and to ensure national security. There are clear structural changes happening, that show that the positions of former leaders are becoming less obvious. In this context, the question about China’s role in shaping the new economic order, determinants of this process and the problems it may cause is raised. Moreover, the great potential of emerging Asian markets requires the investigation of these markets and analysis of the development policies of selected countries and their role in shaping the competitive position and in the equalization of civilizational distances. These issues were addressed by the authors in the papers prepared for the 10th International Conference – Development challenges of Asia-Pacific countries, organized by the Department of International Economic Relations of Wrocław University of Economics in cooperation with the Center of Asia-Pacific Studies operating by the University. The articles in the first part of the volume refer to the economic expansion of the Asia-Pacific countries in the pursuit of the development objectives of selected countries with a special focus put on China, ASEAN countries, Japan and other, selected Asian countries. Among forms of expansion the authors have emphasized the importance of creation and development of China’s Special Economic Zones, the role of mergers and acquisitions conducted by Chinese companies on the European market, cluster-based development policies, and the use of foreign direct investment in the internationalization of Japanese enterprises. Moreover the role of emerging Asian economies in the global business services market has been shown. The focus was also placed on the goals, dilemmas and contexts of North Korea and Kazakhstan development. Last but not least the authors signaled the problem of changing the economic roles of Japan and China in East Asia region after the Asian crisis. The second part of the volume contains the articles devoted to the processes of cooperation between the countries of Asia, Europe and the world. At the outset, the “One Belt – One Road” initiative was introduced, emphasizing its role in supporting the EU’s European Neighborhood Policy. In the following articles, the authors analyzed various directions and aspects of cooperation between the selected ASEAN and the European Union countries, particularly focusing on the economic relations between countries such as Vietnam and Laos, in shaping of which the FDIs carried out in Laos by Vietnamese enterprises play an important role. The links between the Indonesian and Singapore capital markets, including the sudden stop phenomenon of regional and global financial crises period, were also analyzed. The third part of the volume presents selected trends and development strategies in selected regions of Asia. An assessment of the effects of the Chinese government’s intervention policy at the Shanghai Stock Exchange during the stock market crisis and the profitability of the carry trade strategy based on the Japanese currency were evaluated. Moreover, the subject of development policy issues of some countries, including South Korea, were raised, highlighting its role in the global economy. The trend of changes in consumption of agricultural and food products in China in comparison with other countries has been presented, with an attempt to assess China’s food self-sufficiency over the period considered. Finally the Asian perspective on the development of innovation and living standards in cities improvement, emphasizing the role of smart cities in implementing these purposes were presented. Bogusława Drelich-Skulska, Anna H. Jankowiak, Karolina Łopacińska

Asia and Pacific’s growing importance to the rest of the world is widely acknowledged today. The dynamics of Asian economic development have tremendously impacted global trade relationships and regional cooperation. Thus, it is with great pleasure that we deliver another volume of Research Papers on Asia-Pacific economic issues. This year we present 19 papers by various authors who examine the Asia-Pacific region from different perspectives. We decided to group them into 3 Chapters: • Cooperation and trade • Economy and policy • Risks & challenges Papers grouped in the First Chapter describe newly emerging regional trade architecture. You will find there a few analyses of general nature and regional scope (J. Dudziński, A. H. Jankowiak, E. Majchrowska) and some studies on specific trade agreements (A. Klimek writes about Shanghai Free Trade Zone, A. McCaleb and G. Heiduk try to find out what motivates China’s cities to establish partner agreements with cities in Asia, B. Michalski analysing U.S.-Republic of Korea Free Trade Agreement, while M. Maciejewski and W. Zysk look for opportunities for Polish exports in the trade agreement between EU and Vietnam). The Second Chapter is the most diverse one. It is devoted mostly to economic policy issues (including financial sector). S. Bobowski, L. Zyblikiewicz and K. Żukrowska look at the main threads in Asian regionalism. P. Pasierbiak and K. Łopacińska analyse the movements of Chinese capital. M. Dziembała and S. Mazurek deal with the subject of innovation supporting growth and development. Articles in the Third Chapter are focused on extraordinary events influencing economies and development of the Asia-Pacific region. J. Pera prepared an assessment of risk of APEC countries, based on the country risk classification method and selected indexes of internal stability. A. Kukułka and B. Totleben analyse the impact of natural disasters on gross capital formation in Southeastern Asia. Finally, T. Serwach and M. Grabowski and S. Wyciślak deal with synchronization of business cycles and contagion of crises. We sincerely hope that all the articles will be of great value to those who want to understand the role of Asia-Pacific economies in the global economy. Through various interests of authors, our volume provides a valuable insight into the problems of this region. All the papers where submitted for the 8th international scientific conference “Dimensions of Regional Processes in the Asia- Pacific Region” which took place in November 2015 at Wroclaw University of Economics, under the patronage of Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the Ministry of Economy. We appreciate your time and consideration, and we look forward to the submis-sion of your own good work. We also appreciate the time and effort of our peer re-viewers. Thank you! Bogusława Drelich-Skulska, Anna H. Jankowiak, Szymon Mazurek

Asia-Pacific region continues to be an essential element of the global economy. Delivering another volume of Research Papers devoted to that region we have no doubts that Asia and Pacific economic importance will only continue to grow. But the world is changing, and so will change the way in which Asian and Pacific economies will – hopefully – grow and prosper. How the region of huge economic dynamism, but also of diverse economic characteristics, will meet the challenges of the 21st century? Redefinition of the role of Asia-Pacific region in the global economy is a process that is already underway. It has many shades and can be analysed from different perspectives. Both the detailed and overall analysis has a great cognitive value. Appreciating diversity this edited volume presents a collection of 27 papers prepared by the researchers who scientifically deal with various aspects of economic processes taking place in Asia.
